UNLV Captures First-Ever MWC Swimming and Diving Championships Air Force's Chris Knaute and UNLV's Raluca Udroiu named men's and women's swimmer of the year, respectively

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - UNLV captured its first-ever Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships tonight at Oklahoma City Community College. The men's team finished with 839 points, followed by BYU (745.50), Wyoming (592), Utah (560.50) and Air Force (403). The women tallied 701.50 points, besting second-place BYU (670). Utah finished third in women's action with 607 points, followed by Colorado State (489), Wyoming (431), New Mexico (387), Air Force (221.50) and San Diego State (153). Nine new Mountain West Conference all-time and championship records were set at this year's meet. New men's all-time records include the 400-yard individual medley (Chris Knaute [Air Force], 3:50.22), 1650-yard freestyle (Knaute, 15:09.15), 100-yard butterfly (Joe Bartoch [UNLV], 47.30), 200-yard medley relay (UNLV, 1:27.02), 200-yard freestyle relay (UNLV, 1:18.79) and the 400-yard medley relay (UNLV, 3:13.92) The new women's all-time records were the 3-meter dive (Kelsey Patterson [Utah], 524.80), 1650-yard freestyle (Marta Stepanczuk [Utah], 16:32.83) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (UNLV, 1:32.73). MWC Swimming & Diving Championships Notes: Utah senior Marta Stepanczuk set a new Mountain West Conference all-time record, as well as a Utah school record, in the women's 1650-yard (mile) freestyle with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:32.83. The previous MWC all-time record was 16:35.31 by Alyson Noble (UNLV) in 2001. Air Force sophomore Chris Knaute successfully defended his 1650-yard freestyle title, setting a new Mountain West Conference all-time and Air Force school record in the process, clocking in at a provisional qualifying time of 15:09.15. Knaute, the previous MWC all-time record holder in the 1650 free, broke Drew Whitting's Academy record time of 15:10.13, set in 1991. BYU sophomore Brittany Davis (Magna, Utah) won her second straight women's 200-yard backstroke crown with a time of 1:59.41. Second- and third-place finishers Raluca Udroiu (UNLV) and Marissa Martin (Utah) also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship. UNLV junior Adam Martinson successfully defended his 200-yard backstroke title and set a new UNLV school record with a time of 1:45.71. The previous Rebel school record was 1:47.14 by Tomasz Piotrowski in 1997. Wyoming freshman Carl Marais also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship, finishing second with a time of 1:46.63. Utah sophomore Alison McInturff provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 50.86. Utah sophomore Jonathan Larsen defended his men's 100-yard freestyle title with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 44.23. The top-six finishers in the 100 free all provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship. Wyoming senior Scott Usher won his fourth consecutive title in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:57.51. BYU senior Scott Randall defended his men's platform crown, tallying a score of 440.60. UNLV won its fourth men's 400-yard freestyle relay title in six years in a NCAA provisional time of 2:57.43. UNLV won its fourth women's 400-yard freestyle relay crown in six years in a NCAA provisional time of 3:24.80.
