BYU Sweeps Men's And Women's MWC Indoor Track And Field Titles

Colorado State's men and women both finish second.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - The BYU men and women swept the team titles at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House, Saturday afternoon.

The women won their sixth consecutive team title and have never lost a MWC indoor championship, while the men won their fifth title in the six years of the conference. The BYU men scored 207 points, followed by Colorado State with 203.50 and Air Force with 94.50. Wyoming (78) was fourth, followed by New Mexico (67) and Utah (6). On the women's side, BYU scored 188.50, followed by Colorado State with 172 and Wyoming with 80. Utah was fourth with 57.50, followed by San Diego State with 54. UNLV was sixth with 51, followed by New Mexico (31) and Air Force (29).

The men's championship came down to the final event, the men's mile relay. BYU led Colorado State by just 1.5 points going into the relay. The Cougars finished first in the relay with a time of 3:15.65, while the Rams finished second in 3:16.44, which gave BYU the team title by just three and a half points.

 

 

Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship Notes:

  • BYU's Amy Menlove won the 60-meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 8.37. It was Menlove's third MWC title of these championships as she won the pentathlon, Thursday, and the long jump, Friday. Menlove finished third in the hurdles last year. Later on Saturday she also finished fifth in the 60 meters.

  • BYU's Jacob Garlick won the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95. BYU placed first, fourth and fifth in the hurdles, while Colorado State took second and third place. Garlick then also won the 400 meters with a time of 48.54.

  • Halima Decree of UNLV won the women's 60 meters with a time of 7.46.

  • For the second consecutive year, Colorado State's John Woods won the 60-meter dash. The senior ran a time of 6.79. The Rams finished first, fourth and fifth in the event.

  • BYU freshman Heidi Magill won the women's mile with a NCAA provisional time of 4:55.98. Colorado State junior Danielle Korb also ran a NCAA provisional 4:56.92 to finish second.

  • Bryan Lindsay of BYU won the men's mile with a NCAA provisional time of 4:14.05. BYU finished first, third and fifth in the event.

  • Loree Smith of Colorado State won the women's shot put with a MWC all-time indoor and championship meet record mark of 56'-3.00". It is also a NCAA automatic-qualifying throw. It was Smith's second event win of the meet as the senior won yesterday's weight throw as well. The Rams finished first, fifth, sixth, ninth and tenth in the event.

  • Colorado State junior Becky Hammitt won the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:14.19.

  • Wyoming senior Jeremy Thompson won the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:54.67.

  • Rodrigo Mendes of BYU won his second consecutive MWC triple jump title as the senior scored a NCAA provisional mark of 52'-01.75". Mendes also won the long jump title yesterday. Blake Jackson of Wyoming finished second with a NCAA provisional mark of 51'-05.50".

  • Wyoming's Jessica Fox won the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.57.

  • Air Force freshman Travis Picou won the 200 meters with a time of 21.32.

  • Colorado State's Magnus Lohse won the men's shot put with a NCAA provisional mark of 63'-00.25".

  • BYU junior Robison Pratt won his second consecutive men's pole vault title with a NCAA provisional mark of 17'-09.25". The top five finishers in the event all scored NCAA provisional marks.

  • New Mexico senior Matt Gonzales won the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:33.47.

  • BYU junior Kamila Rywelska won her second consecutive women's triple jump title with a NCAA provisional 43'-06.00". Colorado State's Amanda Huddleston finished second with a school record and NCAA provisional 41'-06.50".

  • BYU junior Chelsea Smith won the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:11.17.

  • Colorado State women won the mile relay with a time of 3:49.54.

  • The BYU men won the mile relay with a time of 3:15.65.

    Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Individual Awards:
