New Mexico's Feltman Leads Decathlon, UNLV's Spence Leads Heptathlon

The multi events conclude tomorrow, while the rest of the field opens competition Friday.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Dan Feltman of New Mexico leads the men's decathlon with 3,724 points, while UNLV's Christine Spence leads the heptathlon with 3,231 points after the first day of the 2005 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Wednesday at Colorado State University's Jack Christiansen Track.

The competitors dealt with rainy and cold conditions all day. Feltman outscored the competition in the shot put with a heave of 44'-01.25" for 694 points and in the 400 meters with a time of 49.94 for 817 points. Spence led from the first event, the 100-meter hurdles, as she ran 13.99 for 980 points. She also led the field in the high jump with a mark of 5'-6", and concluded the day with a field-best time of 25.04 in the 200 meters for 883 points.

In the women's competition, Colorado State's Katie Lloyd is second with 3,055 points, while the Rams' Cristina Gourdin is third with 2,993 points. San Diego State's Janine Polischuk is fourth with 2,936 points, while BYU's Liis Berendsen is fifth with 2,899 points.

 

 

BYU's Devin Howe is second in the decathlon with 3,618 points, Air Force's Brian Walsh is third with 3,498 points, while Derek McDonald of New Mexico is fourth with 3,464 points and Air Force's Caleb Pelger is fifth with 3,428 points.

The second day of the meet begins Thursday at noon with the men's decathlon 110-meter hurdles, while the women's heptathlon long jump begins at 12:30 p.m. The multi events conclude tomorrow, while the rest of the field opens competition Friday.
