LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -Lee Cummard scored 15 points and Trent Plaisted added 12 as BYU trounced Long Beach State 74-34 in the season opener for both teams Saturday.

The Cougars, the 2006 Mountain West Conference champions, controlled the game from the start and spoiled the debut of 49ers new coach Dan Monson.

Cummard made 6 of 12 shots and had 9 rebounds in 33 minutes.

The Cougars shot 43.5 percent for the game (27-for-62) and outrebounded the 49ers 55-40.

Long Beach State, the defending Big West champions, shot just 19.1 percent, including 2-for-22 from behind the arc.

In the teams' first meeting since 1985, the Cougars started the game with a 10-0 run, then midway through the first half made four consecutive 3-pointers and increased their lead to 29-4 on a 3 by Jimmer Fredette with 6:24 remaining in the half.
