BYU Wins Third Straight Behind Plaisted

Trent Plaisted scores game-high 21 points and pulls down seven rebounds

PROVO, Utah (AP) -Trent Plaisted's game-high 21 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes of play led Brigham Young to a 100-61 win over Jackson State Friday night in the opening round of the Las Vegas Invitational.

BYU (3-0) used a 23-3 run that spanned the closing minutes of the first half and the opening minutes of the second half to capture a 47-29 lead. The Cougars were never threatened the remainder of the game. Plaisted and Jonathan Tavernari scored six and five points respectively during the run.

Lee Cummard led the Cougars on a 14-0 run midway through the second half with eight of his 14 points to push the lead to 66-33.

Jackson State (0-3) struggled from the floor, shooting only 33 percent to BYU's 55 percent. The Cougars also dominated the points in the paint 54 to 16.

The Tigers began the game with an 8-0 run over the first two minutes, but BYU answered immediately and tied the game at 12 on two free throws by Tavernari.

Michael Loyd came off the bench to score 15 points for the Cougars while Chris Collinsworth had a game-high 10 rebounds also off the bench for BYU.

Chris Hyche was the only Tiger in double figures with 14 points.

The home win gives BYU 33 consecutive - the second-longest home winning streak in the nation.
