New Mexico's Alanna Abeyta scored in the 89th minute of the game to give the Lobos a 1-0 win over Wyoming in the first game of the Mountain West Conference tournament. The Lobos improve to 7-6-4 and will play in the semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4:30 p.m. The Cowgirls finished the season 9-7-3.

The Lobos held the offensive edge in the game as their attackers out shot the Cowgirls 23-to-5. New Mexico's goalkeeper Kristen Winters only had to make one save in the match, while Wyoming's Ashley Sheppard was forced to make 10.

"I thought we were knocking on the door all day," noted UNM's head coach Kit Vela. "Probably of all the opportunities (to score) that was not our best opportunity, but it was such a well deserved goal at such an opportune time. Wyoming is a tough team to play and I thought we did well for 90-minutes."

Abeyta scored the game-winning goal off of a free kick just to the left of the box following a Wyoming foul. The Lobos' Bridgette Sanchez picked up her third assist of the season when she kicked a lateral ball to the top of the box. Abeyta received the ball in mid-air and redirected it into the top left corner of the net just past the outstretched hands of Sheppard.

"We just got taken out of our game," noted UW's head coach Anne Moore. "It was very physical and we usually play a lot better possessions. It was got to be where who ever made the mistake would end up losing and unfortunately it was us."

The Lobos committed 10 fouls, compared to Wyoming's 14. Both teams received cautions in the second half of the game.

New Mexico advances to the semifinal round on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4:30 p.m. The Lobos will play the winner of the top-seeded Utah and #8 Air Force game.
