Top-seeded No. 22 Utah (14-5-1) defeated #8 Air Force Falcons (4-16-1) 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in game two of the Mountain West Conference's Soccer Championship held in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes received goals from Katy Reineke, Amanda Sanchez and Kim Lloyd. Adele Letro picked up two assists as she recorded helpers on Utah's first two scores. The Utes will face New Mexico tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4:30 p.m.
The Utes out shot the Falcons 24-to-3. Twelve of Utah's 24 shots were on goal, and goalkeeper Ashley Mason made two saves.
"We are very excited to advance to the next round," noted Utah head coach Rich Manning. "I was very impressed with Air Force. We played a lot better against them today than we did when we played them before in Salt Lake City and they (AFA) did too. As well as we played, we really had to work for everything. It took a lot of work to create a few chances. We worked hard and I think our offensive game was in good rhythm today. And I think that will bode well for the rest of the tournament."
Utah got on the board in the 26th minute (25:44) with Reineke's third goal of the season. Letro threw a pass into the middle of the box, which Reineke deposited into the right corner of the goal.
In the 69th minute (68:12), Sanchez notched her first goal of the season just moments after entering the match. Sanchez collected a rebound off a shot by Letro. Air Force's goalkeeper, Erin Wallace, initially saved Letro's attempt, but was unable to control the ball. The misplayed ball was left on the ground long enough for Sanchez to poke it inside the left post. Wallace made 10 saves in the match.
Utah added its third and final goal on a free kick by Lloyd. The score was the third of the season for the senior. Lloyd followed up a Falcon foul by knocking in the 25-yard freebie from the left of the box into the right-side of the net.
