UNLV Homers Its Way Past San Diego State At The 2005 MWC Softball Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Second-seeded UNLV used a pair of home runs to get past No. 6 seed San Diego State, 4-1, Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego, Calif. With the win, the Rebels move to 42-16 on the year, while the Aztecs fall to 27-30.

UNLV jumped on top of the Aztecs in the bottom of the first on a Rosa Ordaz RBI single, which scored Brittany Meade.

San Diego State responded in the top of the second on a Tariyn Casillas solo home run to tie the score at one apiece.

The Rebels used the long ball to score the rest of their runs, beginning with Maggie Livreri's two-run home run in the bottom of the third, putting UNLV up 3-1. MWC Freshman of the Year Marissa Nichols put the game away for the Rebels, smashing a solo shot off of SDSU's Celena Velasquez in the fifth inning.

MWC Pitcher of the Year Jacque Kerrigan allowed four hits and struck out one to earn the win and move to 27-13, while SDSU starter Cori Janelli pitched three innings and took the loss to drop to 10-15.

UNLV advances in the winners' bracket and will play the winner of Friday's Colorado State-Utah match-up at 7 p.m. on Friday. San Diego State, which upset Colorado State earlier in the day, will face New Mexico in an elimination game at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning.
