San Diego State Upsets Colorado State In Opening Round Of The 2005 MWC Softball Tournament Aztecs advance to the second round to face second-seed UNLV.
May 12, 2005 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 6 San Diego State upset third-ranked Colorado State, 6-0, Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2005 Mountain West Softball Championship at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego, Calif. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 27-28-0 on the season and advance to the second round where they will face second-seeded UNLV tonight at 7 p.m. PST. The loss drops Colorado State to 29-21-0 on the year. The Rams will play at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in an elimination game against an opponent to be determined late Thursday afternoon. The Aztecs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Erin Mahoney scored on a CSU error. SDSU produced three more runs in the second inning as Bree Boyer scored on a sacrifice bunt before Chrissie Markham scored on a Kristen Carranza single. An Erin Mahoney single plated Boyer to make the score 4-0. The Aztecs added two more runs in the fifth inning when Mahoney and Tariyn Casillas scored on RBI singles. Celena Velasquez (14-12) scattered four hits and struck out six in her complete game shutout for the Aztecs. Colorado State's Jessica Strickland (11-9) picked up the loss, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs.
