Top-Seed Brigham Young Tops Utah At MWC Softball Championship, 6-1 Daniella Urincho picked up the win for BYU, tossing a complete-game three-hitter.
May 12, 2005 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Top-seeded Brigham Young jumped ahead early and held off fourth-seeded Utah to win game three of the Mountain West Softball Championship at the SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego, Calif. BYU (42-12) moves on in the winner's bracket to play in game seven Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Utes (21-28) drop into the loser's bracket and will take on third-seeded Colorado State in game six, Friday at 2 p.m. The Cougars scored in the first after Paige Paramore and Ianetta Le'I hit two-out singles and were pushed home on a two-RBI double from Ashlyn Russell that was mishandled in rightfield, allowing Russell to go home for the third run of the inning. Utah got on the board in the third as Devina Quintero hit a two-out RBI single, scoring Diana Phillips who got on board with a one-out single. BYU added three more in the sixth, off of a two-RBI triple from Le'I and was followed by another triple by Lindi Kennedy, scoring Le'I. Debbie Dodds and Paramore also scored in the inning for the Cougars. Daniella Urincho (15-2) picked up the win for BYU, tossing a complete-game three-hitter, striking out five and walking one. Brianna Gourdin (11-14) took the loss, going the distance and allowing six runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.
