Top-Seeded Brigham Young Advances To MWC Championship Game With 2-1 Win Over New Mexico Summer Tobias (17-6) strikes out a MWC Championship record 14 batters.
May 13, 2005 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Top-seeded Brigham Young advanced to its second Mountain West Conference championship game in its program's history with a 2-1 win in ten innings over fifth-seeded New Mexico Friday evening at the San Diego State Softball Field. The Cougars (43-12) will take on either No. 2 seed UNLV or No. 3 seed Colorado State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. The Lobos end their 2005 season at 16-34. BYU picked up their first run in the bottom of the sixth, as Ianeta Le'i hit a one-out, bases-loaded RBI single to centerfield scoring Krystle Chamberlain from third. The Cougars got hits in the inning from Lauren Watson-Perry, Paige Paramore, plus a walk to Debbie Dodds. New Mexico tied it up in the top of the seventh, as Cassie Chavez laced a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch, then, with two outs, Christina Rios hit a full-count, RBI single to left field to plate the tying run.
Summer Tobias (17-6) picked up the win for BYU, throwing a complete-game four-hitter, striking out a MWC Championship record 14 batters. Ashley Perkins (5-15) took the loss for UNM, going four innings in relief, allowing a run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
