#4 UNLV Advances With 3-1 Win Over #5 San Diego State

The Rebels advance to face #1 BYU in semifinals.

In the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Championship quarterfinals, the #4 seed UNLV Rebels (15-14) came back from a one-game deficit to win their match against #5 seed San Diego State (16-14), 3-1. The Aztecs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead only to watch the Rebels fight back in games two, three and four. With the 26-30, 30-22, 31-29, 30-18 victory, UNLV moves on to the semifinals to face the top seed and 21st-ranked BYU Cougars Friday night at 8 p.m. (PST) in the Cox Pavilion.

UNLV out hit San Diego State 70 to 59 in kills and .256 to .179 in hitting percentage. The Rebels had a match-low .096 hitting figure in game one, but turned things around in their three wins with two games in the .200's and the final game tally of .543. UNLV amassed 10 errors in game one, but hit below seven in each subsequent game. SDSU hit within the .119 to .265 range in all four of its games. The Aztecs never had more than nine errors in any given game.

The Rebels were led by a record setting performance by Melody Nua. The setter assisted on 56 kills, setting a new MWC Championship record for assists by a freshman. Nua also dug out eight Aztec attacks in the match.

Maria Aladjova threw down 19 kills for UNLV and was followed closely by Lauren Miramontes' 18. Jennifer Johnson (11) and Mariana Pencheva (10) rounded out the Rebel attackers in double-digits. Brittani Lumsden and Michelle Banks each recorded 13 digs, as Camille Cunningham (12) and Jada Walker (11) notched double-figures, as well.

 

 

SDSU's Lindsey Noll had 14 kills to lead her team, while Brandie Molnar (13) and Audra Dent (11) broke 10+ kills, as well. Leah Lathrop and Kristen Castillo split the assists in the match, as Lathrop had 23 compared to Castillo's 19. Aime Cordeiro picked up 20 digs, while Melanie Greene had 15.

No. 4 UNLV vs. No. 5 San Diego State Match Notes:
UNLV and San Diego State met for the third time in MWC Championship history tonight. UNLV now holds the tournament series lead, 2-1.

With her 11th dig of the match, UNLV's Jada Walker tied the MWC single-season dig record. Walker finished with 11 digs, giving her 467 on the season and tying Utah's Connie Dangerfield's total (set in 2004) as the all-time mark.

UNLV freshman setter Melody Nua broke the MWC Championship freshman record for assists in a single match vs. the Aztecs. Nua tallied 56 assists to surpass previous record holder BYU's Karina Puikkonen's total of 52 set on Nov. 18, 2000 vs. Colorado State.

A total of seven players from both teams had double-digit kills. For UNLV, sophomore Maria Aladjova led the charge with 19 kills, followed by Lauren Miramontes with 18, Jennifer Johnson with 11 and Mariana Pencheva with 10. San Diego State was led by Lindsey Noll's 14 kills, with Brandie Molnad and Audra Dent rounding out the list with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
